As a photographer, " I don't know how to pose" is the most common thing I hear. Here are some helpful tips on the best way to be comfortable while posing for pictures. Whether you are getting professional photos done, or just having a fun shoot with your friends, having an idea how to pose helps.

The Best Pictures Aren't Actually "Posed"

The most common mistake made when having your pictures taken is that you have to stop every movement and stare into the camera. This creates a very posed and lifeless looking photo. Move around, smile, look at different things. The photographer will not miss the shot, they wait for you to move into the perfect shot. Just be you and move around.

Don't Know Where to Look

Sometimes it is awkward to stare directly into the camera or look off at nothing. A helpful trick I learned to get rid of the "Deer in the Headlights" look, is to close your eyes until the photographer tells you to open them, and he/she will take the photo as soon as you open your eyes.

Music Helps

If you're having trouble shaking the nervousness, ask if your photographer doesn't mind you playing some music. Music always tends to lighten the mood and break an awkward silence, giving you something else to focus on and get in the mood.

The Internet Saves

A couple days prior to your photoshoot, do an internet search on the type of photos you will be getting, look at how they are posing, screenshot them so you don't forget, and try to imitate them. but only if it feels natural.
